There’s a specific kind of magic in the school supply aisle. You know the one. The untouched notebooks, the fresh pack of pens, the transparent sticky notes I absolutely do not need but will absolutely buy. (Every year. No notes.)
I’m writing this on the actual first week of school, both kids officially in middle school (how did that happen?), and it’s back to reality over here in a big way. We spent the last week of summer at the beach, the bay, the pool, and roughly every back-to-school sale squeezing in the last little bit of summer. For the record: JanSport backpacks, Birkenstocks, and Nike slides are apparently back and very much the rage. I was informed.
And listen, we did not stick the landing on day one. Makenzie’s carefully chosen first-day outfit made it into the washer and never quite made it to the dryer. Oops. 😬 And I completely forgot that a certain hat was a non-negotiable part of Cody’s whole look, so it went out filthy for the first day. 🙈 We survived. Barely. Iced coffee helped. 🤣
Oh, and we added a puppy to the chaos. Zoey has thoughts about my calendar now, mostly that it should revolve around her potty breaks, and with the kids gone all day she’s decided I’m the full-time entertainment. (I floated a “yap the hour with Zoey.” She’s fighting me on it. That’s a maybe-later strategy.)

Here’s the thing I’ve learned after a lot of Augusts now: that reset energy isn’t just for the kids. It’s for your business too.
Summer was survival mode, and that’s okay
Real talk? A lot of you had a big summer. Maybe you went to your company conference, maybe you even caught me on a stage somewhere. You came home lit up. Big ideas, new products dropping, fresh catalogs, real momentum.
And then… life. The routine walked out the door somewhere around mid-June, and by August the follow-ups were living in your head and the content calendar was more of a content suggestion. You’ve got the excitement. You’re just still a little bit in summer mode, trying to catch up to your own good intentions.
If that’s you, you’re not alone, and you did not fall behind. You were living your life. But the pencils are sharpened now. It’s time.
Reset your routine, not your whole life
Here’s the catch with fresh starts: we tend to make them way too big. New season, new me, seventeen new habits by Monday. And then we burn out by Wednesday.
You don’t need a whole new business.
You need a simple rhythm that holds when life gets loud again. (Because it will. Fall is basically summer wearing a cardigan.)
Want to know my actual reset?
After all that travel, I’ve got a hundred half-finished conversations and ideas floating around. So I literally blocked my first day back in the office, the day the kids went back to school, just to do a first-pass cleanup on all of it. And then I’m getting back to the basics that quietly slipped all summer. The ABCs:
A is for Active Selling. Actually make the offer. The people who said “maybe later”? It’s later. Sales don’t happen in your head, friend.
B is for Building Relationships. Pull the names living rent-free in your brain into one real follow-up list, and start the conversations. This is the part that pays you all year.
C is for Creating Content. Batch a week at a time instead of scrambling daily. Work smarter, not harder isn’t a slogan, it’s a survival plan.
That’s it. Three moves, every day. It’s the whole backbone of a business that runs even on the days you’re stuck in a pickup line with a puppy in the passenger seat.
Let’s reset together
